What Does Professionalism Mean To You?

What is professionalism? Well, the dictionary defines professionalism as the following;

1 : the conduct, aims, or qualities that characterize or mark a profession or a professional person
2 : the following of a profession (as athletics) for gain or livelihood
Professionalism is the “conduct” that someone in management, or a leadership role, should use when they are in an environment where they have others that look up to them for guidance. That can take place online or offline, but wherever it is how someone carries themselves is still very important. How someone conducts them -selves shows everyone so much about that person and how they truly are as a person. It shows us the standards and/or morals that the person chooses to live their life by.
I have been working in leadership roles just about my whole life because even as a young girl I became a tutor teaching younger children that had learning disabilities. I also started my first business when I was 11 years old, and my parents would never allow me to act anything but professional around customers. My Dad was a very good role model when it came to dealing with people because he had a side business stemming from his job.
I see so many people online that are in roles that have others that look up to them for guidance that are totally clueless how to act and treat people. One thing that I learned from my very first job was that customers, and customer service, better be your #1 priority if you want to grow and keep your customers coming back to you! That was drummed into me on a daily basis!
Online I see Owners of businesses treating their members or customers terrible! I am not only shocked, but totally flabbergasted when I see it happening, and I have to wonder how they can be so ignorant. Recently I saw a prime example of some people being totally and completely “Unprofessional”, and even though it did not happen to me personally, I took action to disassociate myself from these people and anything to do with their products.
Perhaps you are thinking and asking yourself why I would do that since it did not happen to me. Well, that is a very good question and I do have a good reason for it. Let’s look at what the “Golden Rule” says and what it teaches us…”Do unto others as you want others to do unto you.” So, if you want others to treat you well than you need to treat others well first.
Someone once said, sorry I do not know who the author is because they are unknown, but they said this about the Law Of One…”We are all one. When one is harmed, all are harmed. When one is helped, all are healed”. So if people can do harm to a few than they will have no problem doing the same thing to anyone that deals with them. It should be a warning, and a wake up call to everyone, but unfortunately some people can be blindly led by others that talk and act like they care, but they are really only wolves in sheep’s clothing.
I hope this little lesson on “Professionalism” teaches those of you that are in a leadership role how to act and treat others. As for those of you that are following, or looking up to others to guide you, I hope that you keep your eyes, ears, and minds open to what is going on around you. Pay attention to everything that is being said and done, and not to just all the sweet talking that people want you to hear and believe. And also use your own mind to think with, and listen to your gut feelings as well. And one last thing…remember that you are a very valuable person and should always be treated that way by everyone!
